HEALTHY DINING TIPS

It's a challenge to maintain good eating habits when you eat at restaurants often. Here are some tips that will help you make healthy menu choices when dining out.

1. Start with soup, fruit or raw vegetables or a light seafood appetizer
2. Skip the cocktail or limit it to one dry wine or light beer. Sweet wines have about two times the calories. Your best choice …ice water, ice tea or hot tea.
3. Avoid food that is fried or sautéed.
4. Remove fat off red meats and remove skin from chicken.
5. Avoid rich sauces and dips. Choose red pasta sauces over white.
6. Limit bread to one piece (whole grain is best) and skip the butter or margarine.
7. Avoid crackers, which are usually high in fat and sodium.
8. Order half portions of entrees.
9. Food preparation is important. Choose items that are: steamed, broiled, grilled, roasted, baked or poached.
10.Stay away from: buttered, fried, creamed, gravy, au gratin, scalloped and rich.
11.Choose a salad bar when possible. Watch out for prepared specialty salads that often times contain mayonnaise that is high in fat.
12.Opt for vinegar and oil, lemon juice or low fat dressing or buttermilk dressing, rather than regular dressing.
13.For desert, look for a low fat option or have a fruit cup or coffee with low fat cream
14.Eat slow and stop when your full.
