Got Soy?

By: By: Joseph. P. Cannon, MS, CSCS, NSCA-CPT

In recent years women have begun to use soy products because of a belief that it may help with menstrual symptoms. This is because soy contains plant-based estrogens called isoflavones. But is there really evidence that soy helps alleviate menstrual symptoms? The majority of studies have indicated that soy probably works no better than a placebo at reducing the symptoms of menopausal. Only two studies show that soy may reduce the severity (but not frequency) of menopausal symptoms.

Because soy contains estrogen-like isoflavones, some use soy products to help alleviate osteoporosis. According to studies conducted to date, it is too soon to tell if this strategy works. Thus far, studies either find soy has no effect or very little effect upon bone growth. The United States government is now funding two long term studies to further identify soy’s role in bone growth.

In October 1999 the FDA allowed soy labels to include the claim that a diet that is low in cholesterol and saturated fat, which consisted of 25 grams of soy per day could help reduce the risk of heart disease. Currently this is the only health claim which can be made on behalf of soy. Research is ongoing to determine what, if any, other benefits soy might possess.
